Tuscan Style Decorating For The Kitchen

A Tuscan decorating theme can put some old world charm into your kitchen and make it a warm homey room to gather in. The Tuscan style incorporates warm earth tones along with natural materials and architectural accents to create a time worn look. Although the look is of a centuries old kitchen you can achieve it without having to buy priceless antiques.

Color

The colors mimic those of the Tuscan landscape rich golds, earthtones and even tones from the sea mingle together for this look of old Italy. Buy some majolica pottery (either new or old) and use those colors to influence your wall and floor choices. Using natural materials like stone, slate, granite or terra cotta for your flooring and countertops will help complete the look. Try some faux painting on your walls to give it the look of antique plaster.

Lighting

Think old world in your lighting and stay away from new or modern styles. Some nice antique looking wrought iron lights will be right in style. Its OK to also have recessed lighting for your task lights, but choose your pendant lights or chandeliers carefully. Stay away from anything too shiny and stick with muted metals.

Accessories

You can buy accessories like those you might find in a Tuscan kitchen brand new today, or you can scour the antique shops to get real antiques. Look for old pottery bowls and pitchers as well as painted or antiqued wooden bowls. Majolica makes a nice addition to a Tuscan style kitchen and you can buy whole sets of this pottery new today and use it for everyday use. Use lots of decorative jars of oils with peppers and ropes of garlic, peppers and grape vines. Antique look signs with a wine motif can add to the wall decor as can wallpaper murals in the form of Italian frescos and niches. Soften it up with lots of greenery.

Furniture

You want your furniture to have an old world look. Chunky wood tables with chippy or distressed paint go nice. A distressed wooden cupboard (perhaps with chicken wire doors) can give you some extra storage and add to the look if you have the space. Display your majolica or old world pottery behind the chicken wire to authenticate the look.

Decorating a Tuscan kitchen can be a lot of fun. You can get the look with brand new accessories, or if you enjoy collecting antiques, you can scour the flea markets and antique malls for those perfect pieces. Either way, you will be creating a kitchen with charm and character.

Healthy Cooking For A Healthier You

You love to cook, and you love to eat. But you feel like you're not doing it right. Somehow you know you need to change the way you cook. You eat and you gain weight. Yet there are others out there who eat such lavish dishes yet never seem to put on the pounds. You need to learn the secrets of healthy cooking. Don't fret, you can learn these easy healthy cooking techniques and cook you way to a better diet, better health and a better life.

It is relatively easy to find healthy cooking techniques which you can apply to your daily life. Just look it up on the internet, and you will find hundreds. Look at books and videos, and you will find even more techniques for cooking healthy. Just remember that cooking healthy is simple and will not alter your life. One of the most immediate technique that you can use is as easy as replacing your salad dressing. Instead of the usual high-calorie fattening salad dressings, opt for low-fat or non-fat dressings available readily in the market. This basic change will assist in reducing your intake of calories. Many of us would think that eating salads would be a healthier choice compared to say a burger. However keep in mind that if we drench our salad with the fattening dressing, our salad will contain more calories than that burger!

Hey, those low-fat and non-fat dressing tastes funny, you say. Or they are tasteless. Well, this doesn't have to be so. Another option is to have salsa, which packs a punch. Salsa is a fantastic alternative to fattening salad dressings. The appetizing salsa can help dress up any dish you have. Instead of salsa, you can also choose marinade. These no fat low calorie marinades instantly add a burst of flavor. Or you could have some mustard mixed with some soy sauce. This homemade dressing is simply delicious. Be creative and bold and try out new recipes.

If you're a meat eater and love cooking meat, you can have ground beef or turkey as alternatives to a healthier diet. One healthy cooking technique that you can try is to basically cook the meat and once that is done, to use a spatula to hold the meat in place while you drain off the excess oil and fat. Once you drain off all the unnecessary oil and fat, you can now enjoy your meat without the excessive fat content and calories. Your food will taste lots better and you will not be dragged down by the lethargic feeling you'd normally get from eating a greasy, fattening meal.

Healthy cooking techniques when put to use can improve your diet, your health and your life. And if you cook for others, you will be giving them the great gift of these advantages too! You will be in for a great surprise when you realize how easy it is to utilize these healthy cooking techniques in your everyday diet, and make room for a healthier you. What To Consider When Choosing The Month and Location of Your Fall Wedding Celebration

The days will soon be getting shorter and the weather cooler while engaged couples begin to finalize their fall wedding plans. If you are planning an autumn wedding here are some tips on choosing a month and a location for your dream wedding.

Mid-September to Late-October

The colors of the autumn leaves are the most vibrant at this time of the year. You'll have a perfect combination of colorful leaves on the trees and a scattering of fallen leaves upon the ground. It's a perfect time for holding an outdoor fall wedding, as well as a beautiful setting for those memorable photographs. The weather has cooled off a bit, but it's still not overly chilly (usually).

Those couples that live in Canada may elect to have a Thanksgiving wedding theme mid-month.

In any case, if you do decide on having an outdoor ceremony and/or reception, plan on setting up large event tents and renting outdoor space heaters just in case as the weather can be somewhat unpredictable at this point.

End of October Nuptials

Halloween wedding themes have become a popular choice for the last week of October. With all the Halloween items available you won't have much problem planning out your dcor or selecting favors.

A Wedding in November

The month of November can be a bit more iffy in terms of cold weather and possible snow flurries, especially in the northern regions. It's best that you go with an indoor venue for your wedding and reception at this time of the year.

Thanksgiving theme weddings are often planned by couples during this month since it's easy to create and pick up decorating items, flowers and favors.

Choosing an Ideal Location For Your Fall Wedding

In the early part of the fall, holding your fall wedding ceremony outdoors provides a truly photographic setting if you live in an area where the tree leaves turn a wondrous array of colors. Think of holding your ceremony in one of the following locations:

  • Apple orchards with their colorful leaves and bright, red apples for contrast. Theme Suggestion: apple orchard theme wedding.
  • A vineyard is also a popular choice with many brides and grooms. Theme Suggestions: wine/vineyard/grape wedding theme.
  • Local nature parks are also provide a perfect setting for a fall wedding. The trees themselves provide a wonderful decorating scheme. Theme: colorful leaves.

For later in the fall or if you aren't interesting in having your wedding outside, look for 18th century style churches, Tudor style inns, historic villages, or a large barn to hold your ceremony and reception. These places provide wonderful character and lend themselves to being decorated in fall foliage and decor. If possible, choose locations that provide warmth using rich dark wood on the floors and/or walls, as well as welcoming fireplaces.

Top 10 Lanzarote Restaurant Suggestions

Please read through my top 10 favourite restaurants around the island of Lanzarote and please also feel free to go and try them for yourselves!

Almacen De Sal - Situated right on the sea front promenade in the centre of Playa Blanca, this restaurant is my favourite. This restaurant used to be an old salt repository so has bags of character and charm. The service is second to none as is the cuisine. There is an extensive menu to choose from and I have many favourites on the menu including the onion soup, advocado with prawns, Steaks, fish, paella, to name but a few! This restaurant also has live piano music and is very child friendly yet also romantic.

Restaurante Playa Quemada - Playa Quemada. We would definately recommend this restaurant if you are prepared to go a little off the beaten track! From Playa Blanca is it just after Yaiza and there is a right turn that takes you down to Playa Quemada. Dont wear your high heels as the car park leaves a little to be desired! This restaurant serves fabulous food and there is always excellent fresh fish available. Booking is definitely advisable.

Mirador de Lobos - Playa Blanca, next door to the entrace of the Natura Palace Hotel. This restaurant is a firm favourite in our family as it is definately child friendly and has an extensive menu. The fresh fish and any specials of the day are worth trying.

Don Camillo - Playa Blanca, on the sea front promenade towards the harbour. Don Camillo offers excellent international cuisine with an extensive menu. There are three different kitchens, including a steak grill and pizzeria. The T-bone steak is wonderful but dont order it unless you havent eaten for a while!

La Era - Yaiza, behind the Town Hall. This restaurant is open all week from 1.00pm till 11.00pm and booking is advisable. La Era is in the lovely little village of Yaiza, set in a 300-year-old farmhouse with gardens, courtyards and outbuildings restored by Cesar Manrique into a fascinating and beautiful place to eat and drink. La Era serves authentic Canarian cuisine as well as International dishes.

La Bocaina - next to the petrol station in Playa Blanca, on the right, travelling toward Playa Blanca. This restaurant has been around for 40 years although now under new ownership. The soups, sauces are all homemade and prepared to order. Therefore do not come to this restaurant if you are in a hurry! First class Cuisine and this restaurant is closed on Mondays.

Restaurante Terraza Case Pedro - Playa Blanca. I would recommend this as an excellent fish restaurant down on the promenade of Playa Blanca. Walk down to the sea front and when you reach the small beach area in front of the restaurants, turn right. You are heading for the green restaurant which is on the corner. Keep walking until you see the restaurant called Restaurante Terraza Casa Pedro. Beware, there is a restaurant next door to it that is also called Restaurant Pedro - make sure you go in the first Pedro restaurant. We thoroughly recommend that you have the fresh fish of the day served with canarian potatoes and sauce. This is a lovely evening restaurant, but is also excellent at lunch times, as you can sit out by the sea in the outside eating area. This restaurant is normally closed on Thursdays.

El Bodegon Del Mano - Playa Blanca. This is a superb restaurant for steak. This is a small restaurant run by Chef Jess Martnex Lebrusn and is excellent. The Chef himself cooks and is the waiter too he has one assistant helping in the kitchen. It offers a very small but exclusive menu and we thoroughly recommend the steak in pepper sauce, mushroom sauce or chestnut sauce. This is a quiet restaurant, probably not suitable for very young children and is usually closed on Mondays. It is located in the pedestrianised shopping area behind the sea front. Walk past the Marcial Supermarcado and the restaurant is on your right-hand side, not directly after Marcial Supermarcado but the next right. It is situated underneath Restaurant Romantica. It is recommended that you book this restaurant prior to going as it can get very busy.

LagOmar - Oasis de Nazaret at the top of the village, off the road between Tahiche and Teguise. If youre looing to dine in dramatic surroundings then LagOmar is hard to beat as this restaurant, serving modern international food, used to be part of former film star Omar Sharifs home built into the side of a disused quarry by two German architects in the style of Cesar Manrique.

The menu never seems to change that much but the location itself makes up for that and the quality of cooking is excellent.

Amura - Far end of the marina at Puerto Calero which is a ten minute taxi journey from Puerto del Carmen. Amura enjoys a great sea front location in the marina at Puerto Calero and offers top quality international cuisine in up market surroundings. Like many other leading restaurants, Amura has a New Years Eve spectacular planned which involves fireworks, free bar and live music and dancing. Excellent for a special occasion.

I still have many restaurants to try around Lanzarote, but as I am a villa owner in Playa Blanca, I will be in a position to try more as time goes by and then pass on my reviews to the future guests of my Villa.

Becky is the owner of Villa Jasmin, a luxury villa in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote. The villa is available for rental and further details can be found on http://www.villajasmin.co.uk

The Importance of Higher Education

When choosing a college, the potential student has many factors to consider. Such as what degrees are offered, how long the program for each degree will last, and will the student want to live on or off campus? Some colleges do not offer the same programs and certain degree programs may require less time to finish. Location is important when considering a college or university. Some students prefer to stay close to their home, while others enjoy the freedom of living several states away. Community colleges are also a valid option for those who are interested in earning a degree. Part time classes can allow easier access to higher learning. Some colleges are available over the internet, giving even the busiest person a way to earn a degree.

The internet offers a great tool for those in search of the right college. Sites with tips on finding colleges are easily found, while the colleges themselves usually have websites that list the programs and their lengths, size of the student body, social programs, and costs. Cost should not be the determining quality of a university since most colleges regardless of their tuition cost will try to aid students from every economic background. One tip in finding a school and learning more about the quality of it is by learning the percentage of student who return to continue their next year of education instead of transferring to another college. A good return means the college has in place support systems, academic courses, and other factors that make the college a good choice for students.

Visiting a college campus is the best way to gain insight on the lay of the land. Take a while to stroll the grounds. Stop into the career center and talk to a counselor, take time to visit a professor who teaches a subject that is interesting. All of these things will give the student a better idea of how the college will actually be when they sit down to make the final decision in which college or university to attend.

Should You Let Your Stock Photo Business Customers Pay By Credit Card?

To accept credit card payments you need to set up a Merchant Account. This is a credit card processing account that you establish, that makes it possible for you (your photography business) to accept all major credit cards for payment. This account is not the same as your checking account or savings account, but it allows you to accept credit card payments from your customers, and for the money to get deposited into your existing bank account.

TWO TYPES

There are two types of accounts a merchant can use. Unless you are a brick-and-mortar studio or stock photo agency, you probably wont be interested in the first type, which is the over-the-counter type of account, where the credit card is physically swiped through a machine at the time of purchase.

The account that likely would fit you best is the Mail-Order/Telephone Order merchant account. Your client, photobuyer or print order customer, enters their credit card information onto a form on a website, or by email, or by phone. You then process the merchant account transaction, which goes to a verification provider. Once the card is verified and approved (done electronically), your clients payment is deposited into your bank account.

Can you afford to accept credit card payments? Some banks may charge you an annual fee in addition to a per transaction fee -- but there are many other providers that charge only a small percentage of the sale amount at each transaction, when you process a credit card (you pay an average of 2-3% per transaction to such a merchant account provider). These merchant account providers are ideal for small business owners and online businesses that may need to process only a handful of sales each week.

There are several credit card processing providers to choose from, each offering different features and fees. Figuring which one of these would work best for you, to process your customer's credit card payments, can be a daunting task.

A local bank, because they are not familiar with the stock photo industry, may deny your business application for a merchant account because they don't want to take the risk. Most small businesses end up going through third party providers who are willing to take the risk, and actually get the merchant account on your behalf; then apply their own rate structure to your transactions.

To move ahead with your merchant account, you'll need a shopping cart program of some kind, which must work with the system you use to process credit cards online. Unfortunately, if you go with a third party shopping cart rather than a custom written one, it may not work with all credit card processing gateways. Be sure that whatever shopping cart program you use on your website, works with the merchant account you ultimately end up using to process customer payments.

Whats the charge to get involved? You pay fees to the third party merchant account provider (or the bank if you are able to secure your own account directly with a bank that provides it) in exchange for the ability to accept credit card payments. The fees and rates you pay will vary depending on many factors, including how long you've been in business, the type of business you operate, your credit score, how much of your sales are processed by phone versus online, and the amount of credit card sales you process each month.

As mentioned, some providers charge an annual fee in addition to a fee per transaction, while other providers charge only a percentage of each transaction processed. Typical rates for small businesses accepting phone and mail order payments are $0.10 to $0.30 per transaction, plus 2 to 3% of the transaction amount. If the merchant account provider you are considering wants to charge more than this percentage, be sure to check out a few others to see if you can get a lower rate. Sometimes, your credit rating will result in your having to pay higher fees -- but it's worth shopping around a little to see if you can get a lower percentage rate per transaction.

When you're shopping companies, looking for the best merchant account provider, make sure to compare all of the fees to see how much you're going to end up spending per each sale. You should also take into consideration what the application fee is (if any), how much you pay annually, how much you must spend on equipment needed to set up your account (in case you need a swiping machine), and whether or not you must maintain a monthly minimum of sales volume.

YOUR LOCAL BANK

If you sign up for a merchant account with your local bank, youll be able to make direct deposits into your business account at the bank. If you outsource, study the terms for cancellation and under what conditions the provider can cancel your account, as well. Compare how each merchant account provider allows you to withdraw your money -- can you do it whenever you want or do you have to do it at specific times of the month or year? How long will it take to receive your funds once you've requested a withdrawal or transfer of the money? How does the provider handle charge-backs? Read all of the forms and contracts associated with the merchant account before you sign anything.

The process for applying for a merchant account varies depending on the company. For example, some providers ask you to provide a photo of your drivers license, and even of your home office or studio to verify you are in the location you say that you are. Some companies will want to send a representative to photograph your place of business. Occasionally, you'll be asked to provide a DBA (Doing Business As) or business license, your tax returns, and profit and loss statements.

In our own case, here at PhotoSource International, about five years ago we did our homework and contacted a half a dozen providers. We determined that Total Merchant Services would be best for us. They have been consistent and quick, and I can highly recommend them. If youre interested in checking them out:

What Are Indoor Pollutants?

Indoor air pollution involves a great deal more than mold. There are many indoor pollutants that can produce health effects similar to mold. The difference lies in peoples acceptance of conditions that are less than desirable.

Occasionally, we are called to collect mold samples in a home or building because of odors or discomfort felt by the occupants. Once the laboratory results come back showing normal levels of mold spores, we must turn our attention to other concerns.

There are two main categories of indoor contaminants:

  • Biological contaminants: Mold, bacteria, pollen, and viruses. Certain molds produce microbial volatile compounds (MVOC) and some of these are known to be toxic. Mold gives off a musty odor, while bacteria gives off an odor similar to rotten eggs.
  • Chemical contaminants: Adhesives, carpeting, upholstery, manufactured wood products, copy machines, pesticides, and cleaning agents may emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including formaldehyde. The smell varies according to the chemicals. Tobacco smoke can also contribute to high levels of VOCs.
The Environmental Protection Agency states that certain VOCs are carcinogens. It warns that low to moderate levels of multiple VOCs may produce acute reactions and some can cause chronic and acute health effects at high concentrations. See IMPROVING AIR QUALITY WITH PLANTS.

Sick Building Syndrome, or SBS, refers to certain symptoms that affect some occupants while they are in a building and disappear when they leave. The symptoms cannot be traced to specific pollutants or sources. It is believed that energy conservation measures following the energy crunch of the 70s have contributed to SBS. The superinsulation improved energy efficiency while reducing fresh air exchange. In the late 1970s, workers began complaining of various health problems, such as itchy eyes, skin rashes, drowsiness, respiratory and sinus congestion, headaches, and other allergy-related symptoms. Dr. Wolverton offered the following explanation:

"The airtight sealing of buildings contributed significantly to the workers health problems. Similarly, synthetic building materials, which are known to emit or off-gas various organic compounds, have been linked to numerous health complaints."16

In 1989, the EPA submitted a report to Congress in which more than 900 organic chemicals were identified in newly constructed buildings. The report warned that some chemicals were in amounts one hundred times the norm. Today, the EPA states that contaminant concentration levels rarely exceed existing standards and guidelines even when occupants continue to report health complaints.17 Considering the large number of VOCs found in buildings, collecting air samples of volatile compounds may or may not identify possible causes of occupants discomfort.

While working with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Dr. Wolverton conducted many experiments involving the use of indoor plants to help remove indoor contaminants. His research concluded that specific plants play a role in removing specific volatile compounds, such as formaldehyde, benzene, trichloroethylene (TCE), and others.
